The ESPNow Modem for Reticulum is an innovative hardware and software project developed by CIPRO designed to provide high-speed links using the native ESPNow protocol of ESP32 microcontrollers, integrating seamlessly with the Reticulum Network Stack.
Project Description
This device acts as a physical interface (modem) that allows Reticulum systems to communicate wirelessly without relying on traditional Wi-Fi infrastructure (routers or access points). By using ESPNow, a direct device-to-device link is achieved with very low latency.
Operation Modes
The system is highly versatile and can be configured to operate in three distinct roles depending on the needs of the network:
- Node (Modem): Acts as a direct interface for a client (PC, Raspberry Pi, phone) allowing access to the Reticulum network.
- Repeater: Extends the coverage range of the ESPNow/Reticulum mesh by autonomously retransmitting packets.
- iGate (Internet Gateway): Serves as a bridge between the local ESPNow wireless network and an internet connection or larger LAN network.
Key Features
- High-Speed Mesh: Leverages the bandwidth of 2.4 GHz frequencies to achieve transfer speeds far superior to UHF/VHF or LoRa, allowing for heavy data flow and rapid messaging.
- Long-Distance Links: Because it operates on these frequencies, the modem has the capability to establish point-to-point long-distance wireless links through the use of high-gain directional antennas.
- Total Independence: Requires no routers, DHCP servers, or commercial Wi-Fi networks. Nodes communicate in a decentralized manner.
